Default Wiper/Washer Pump HELPP!!!!

Hello fellas,

This is my first time asking a question on this forum.

Just a little back round on myself: fixing up a 79 vette, 21 years old, little experience with cars but learning, from the motor city!!!

Im having two problems with my wiper motor and washer pump.

1. New wiper motor works but clicks loudly everytime it makes a revolution. Im assuming this isnt normal?

2. Washer pump CABLE receives good POWER and GROUND (tested it with a test light) but when i ATTEMPT to turn on the pump the ground cable sends out a pulse instead of a constant ground, which doesnt power the pump.

3. Solenoids clicks a lot whenever i power the wiper and washer but i dont know if that has to do with anything??

I asked my uncle who is an electrical engineer at Ford what could be the problem and he said it probably would not be the relay but it could be the CONTROL SWITCH.

This seemed weird to me because the switch was sending signal to the motor but then again im not an expert or electrical engineer.

Then I checked online and saw that the control switch had some sort of "PULSE" so that furthered the confusion.

I want to know if my CONTROL SWITCH is defective or if something else is the variable before i go out and spend $100 on a switch i dont need!!!

Any help is appreciated thanks!!

Also if anyone has questions on replacing the TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SHAFT I would be able to guide you in the right direction since i went to hell and back to swap mine out.

The washer pump should be hot waiting for ground from the wiper switch. Since you're getting voltage on the washer pump ground I'd suspect the switch is your issue.

Pulse... is delayed wipers. If you don't know if you have them or not just look at the ****. Pulse wipers had a rounded arrow on the ****.

If you pull the switch here is how you test it. To pull the switch remove the speedo and tach housing.

Once you get it out.. Here is how to test it.

Wiper Switch Testing 78-82 w/pulse wipers I’ve colored the terminals to the corresponding color below.

A Gray.. This is a power connection for the wiper lamp. Has nothing to do with the basic function of the switch and only receives power when you pull on the dash lamps or interior lamps.

B is an empty socket in the connector. Nothing happing there.

C is the purple wire.. it is the high and low speed ground. If you test continuity from the purple to E, the black terminal you should have continuity in all positions except off.

D Gray with a black stripe. This is your high speed ground and should pass continuity to the black wire connection E in all positions except Hi speed.

E.. as mentioned above.. is the main ground wire for the switch.

F is the pink wire, and the only time this wire will ping continuity to ground is when you push inward on the switch.

G is the dark green wire and this is the delay control wire. It will ping continuity to black in every switch position except the delay pulse position.

H is the brown wire and it is the input voltage to the delay pot built into the switch. I is the white with a black stripe wire. This is the output voltage from the delay pot in the switch.

Now what concerns me.. The controller… The delay controller has been an issue for years with these cars and more so than the wiper switch. I’m not saying you couldn’t have a bad one, but the only issue you typically have with the wiper switches is corrosion that builds up inside. The switches will corrode and when they do they don’t make proper contact causing a failure.

Controllers short out, the wires can come un-soldered, relays go bad and so on. A shorted controller can take out a wiper switch.

And once you find there is an issue... here is how you rebuild it.

And if you do have pulse wipers here is how you clean and fix the potentiometer inside the switch (not in the rebuild instructions).

I finally got around to bench testing the switch which appeared to be fine, no I'm guessing its the "controller" since the solenoid makes very odd noises when i turn the switch to any position.

Is there any way to bench test the controller, if so where is it located?
