I just picked up my 1971 4 speed white vette! after being out of the game for over 7 years. My first question is this, I pulled in my driveway and put the emergency break on which didn't work well so I just need to adjust it. But I put it in gear to stop from rolling back and it still rolled although very slowly. Should it do this while in gear? Is there something wrong with the trans?
Well it certainly could if on a significant grade. What gear were you in? 1st or reverse is the highest ratio, if you are in another gear that may help.

I was in first. it wasn't a big grade but was a little steep.
I also have a '71 4-speed with an inoperable parking brake. I've parked it many times on a moderate grade. I've never had a problem with it moving although I put it in reverse instead of 1st gear.
The only thing I can think of that would allow this would be a weak pressure plate or at least out of adjustment. I wouldn't think the grade would overpower the engine and cause the whole rotating assembly to turn.
There is no way a manual trans car should roll when parked with the trans in gear. It has to be a clutch or pressure plate problem but it also must be slipping as you drive it. An adjustment might fix it if you're lucky.

I have never had a car that rolled in gear and one of my driveways is steep. Something's not right.
