I have the original "y pipe " my 82' came with with the original manifolds. I'm thinking on going with thrush welded mufflers for now. Would y'all recommend leaving the y pipe off and just going with a whole new set up or use the y pipe and a whole next set up after it? And I'm leaving the catalytic converter off would that make a issue?

keep the original in garage and get yourself some true duals and h or x pipe if emission in your state allow it or if you know a guy.

A new exhaust on my 78 is several project away so I have not really studied it yet. But, are there not replacement cats that have little or no resistance?

I'surprise myself but I think a car that should have cats should indeed have them. They do serve a legitimate pupose of cleaner air..

I think cars with maintained emission controls are worth more money as well..

So, hopefully someone might add.some input regarding.performance using new cats.

Rookie here.....I installed free-flowing cats on my 350SBC CARBED true dual exhaust street truck.

Cats have come a long way in 45 years....approx. 1 ft. long/compact....(and I don't even like them)...........

Before I installed the cats I added 02 sensors for tuning the carb...even with the sensors tuned, the exhaust was strong smelling.....

After adding the "mini-cats" and re-tuning with the 02 sensors....the exhaust smell was hardly noticeable compared to pre-cat "smell test".

I got the cross fire fuel injection that's why I'm wondering if I need the cats back on since it has a computer. I really don't want the cats but this is the first "muscle car" I've own with injection and don't know how it would do.

The cats will certainly "clean up" the exhaust smell, but they also add a ton of heat under the floor, and we all know how hot these cars get as it is. Removing the cats on our '77 made it stinky out back, but the interior was noticeably cooler.

With that being said, if you have smog testing in your area, you'll need the cats.

the easy way ,you gut the cat put the y pipe back on with whatever mufflers you like.or you can put on true duels from the factory headers on back.If your motor is factory stock you will not get too much from true duels. If you change your cat or you gut it and get a computer light you have to go to a heated 02 sensor.how much work and money do you want to spend.

I'm not familiar with o2 sensors. What's the difference of a "heated" one compared to a factory one?

what you have is a regular 02sensor.it has to be heated from the exhaust heat to work. When you put on freeflow mufflers and a open cat you will sometimes not get enough heat for the sensor to work. The good news is most times you don't have too.For The heated 02 sensor you have to run a hot wire to it that's all .if you still have your old cat it is very restrictive. If you put on a new one it will flow great .But it does not hold back the heat or pressure.you will like that.Lots of guys have done changes and did not have to do anything .a few had to add the sensor to make the computer happy
