I just bought a 1970 454 and I want to verify it is numbers matching as the seller claimed. I have no reason to doubt it, but just doing my due diligence.
I found the Engine Code on the pad that is T1218CZU which indicates it was built in Tonawanda in December and is for a 1970 454 Corvette. However there is no partial VIN number on the pad. Is this normal? Is there somewhere else I should look for this?

What is the build date of your Corvette ? it's on trim tag on drivers door post .
With an engine assembly date that early, I'm going to guess that it is a VERY early car. Chevrolet used an alternate location to stamp the VIN derivative on 1970 Corvettes built the first two to three days of production. That location was down by the oil filter on an unmachined portion of the block (and as such, can be difficult to see).

This info is out of the 1968-1982 corvette restoration guide "Very early '70 engines have been observed with the VIN derivative stamping on the bottom drivers side of the block above the oil filter"
Hope this helps

I believe this was a forum members 70 that recently sold on eBay. Boat daze is there anyway you can post a pic of the engine pad ? Don't believe I ever saw a early LS5 without vin stamped on pad.

I've seen several small block 1970 Corvettes with the VIN derivative in the alternate location, but I don't remember having seen a big block 1970 early enough to have the VIN derivative down by the oil filter.
A fair number of 1969 Camaros used this location for the VIN derivative stamping... I remember my own Norwood, Oho built, 1969 Camaro (June 1969 assembly) was done this way. I don't recall the exact dates this method was used for Camaros though.
Stan, another forum member don Bayer also has a70 LS5 vin 133 I have asked if he could post pic of his engine pad. There are pics of his 70 LS5 vert in the 70 owners thread above...Jerry

Due diligence is what you would have done prior to purchasing the car. At this point its trying to cover your ****.
Hopefully you find vin stamped into the block near the oil filter. If its extremely easy to see, it has been added to the block as they were usually not easy to read.
