Default What Causes Starring

I guess the first thing I need to know is what is "starring" and where can it occur? The only familiarity that I have with starring is the star that appears on the hood if the hood is closed on the air filter wing nut. Yes, this is what the hood looked like on my 72 when I bought it. I replaced the wingnut with a regular nut as it was the wings on the wingnut that caused the starring. It still worries me that the air filter is so close to the hood. Is there something I should do besides replacing the wingnut?

Also, I am wondering it starring happens in other places and how to avoid it?

Thanks!

replace the air cleaner? is it stock? is your intake manifold stock or aftermarket? how are your motor mounts? engine rocking in the frame when you rev it?

...What Causes Starring...
Impact, usually from the underside of a painted surface. Road debris from tires can cause starring.

Good to know. "Impact" being the operative word. I guess the only way to avoid that is to be careful of the surfaces you drive on. Thanks.

If you have an after market intake you may want to consider going with a lower profile air cleaner and filter. They call it a drop down air cleaner.

And the drop down will still get enough air to the carb?

And even if you use the 'clay' method to determine air cleaner clearance, be aware that these hoods have some flex and bounce to them.

Sooooo...if you SLAM the hood down (while throwing a temper tantrum) it will flex enough to hit the wing nut.

I don't want to talk about it.

OUCH! That is precisely one issued I wondered about. I am sorry to heart that you had to find that out the hard way. Thanks for the warning, though.
