Is it possible to disassemble these so that the pillar can be rechromed?

You are in luck.

Al Knoch has bought the original factory tooling for the 69 factory headrests. Send him your headrests, he'll rechrome the attachment shafts and refoam and recover the headrests in original colors. About 5 years ago (?) he charged me $400. I thought it was a great deal. You'll get back factory duplicate headrests. There's no stitching on the headrests...they are seamingless molded pieces like factory original.

I wanted headrests for my 68. I bought 69 seat frames on ebay to get the seat backs with provisions for the head rests. I bought some 69 head rests on ebay..they were the wrong color, burgundy, and the shafts were a little corroded. Sent them to Al. They came back looking like factory new in the correct light bright metallic blue color.
