IIRC it's a 5/8 sqr so yes you are correct.
If you can't find an 8pt socket, one of those multi-size, one-tool-does-it-all sockets with the spring loaded pins in it will work (if you get the larger size one). Also good for some locking wheel nuts that someone has lost the key for. Just need to hide it in the bottom of the toolbox so your buddies don't see it.

12 pt will only work if is triple 4 (pretty rare). Most everyone you would find would be the normal double 6
Check wallyworld or whatever for a larger gator grip socket, it'll work in most cases.
Sears (USA) should have a 8pt socket if there's one near you

The differential plug has a four-sided (not 6 or 12) head. A 6- or 12-sided socket will strip it. Don't try.
You need the 5/8", eight-sided socket. And believe me, if that plug has never been out before, use the proper socket. A little muscle will be needed.
