Loose Hurst Shifter
Meaning, if I put it in any gear, once in gear there is play in the shifter, lots of play. So before I get stuck in a gear, I'm trying to get this figured out.
Searching leads me to the mounting bolts have likely backed off due to some rough roads and that is causing the play forward and back.
What I'm trying to find out... is this better attacked from the bottom or the top of the car? I can't seem to get a good answer on if I should pull the center console to access or go under.
My plan was to start under the car, have someone move the shifter so I can watch and hopefully see the loose parts that need my attention and if that doesn't work then pull the console and check.
So either I'm just venting or if someone has a good "start here" I'm all ears.
It's warming up and I'm ready to be driving the ol girl. Here is my son yesterday giving her a once over in preparation of being able to hit the streets.

I started with DDawson's advise and removed the console cover to check the handle bolts. Thought, I never get lucky but I should try and thank goodness I did. Luck was finally on my side.
In case anyone ever googles this, the handle bolt is really easy to get to, 4 screws to remove the console cover, a handful of 7mm bolts holding in the rubber shift boot that is under the leather shift boot (leather comes off with the console cover) and presto, you are looking right at the bolts. Took 30 minutes taking my time and chatting with my boy while doing this.

and because I don't want to do even a simple job twice, I thought I would try to stack the deck on my side.

Then how about a little celebration photo?
