This car continues to challenge me on the simplest things. I have a 68 couple with a standard (non-tele) steering column. A shop I have pulled my restoration from had remobed the steering column from the car, and disassembled the cup/hub assembly at the top of the column, removed the turn signal switch, canceling cam, steering wheel, horn button, etc. Now I have the pleasure of putting it all back together after refinishing the column.
I put in a new turn signal switch and canceling cam. The switch seems to work mechanically. But I am stumped as far as how to assemble the rest of the steering end of the column. The "foot" at the end of the horn contact sits about 1/2" above the button on the canceling cam. Do I have parts missing here? Have I mis-assembled something? I feel stupid because the various assembly pictures should be providing me with enough info, but I am not groking what I am seeing. Please help.
So, did the 68L have something unique and there is no aftermarket replacement for it? The black one I have has a 1" long aluminum rod, a spring, and a 1" long plastic sleeve that goes over everything, and interlocks with the back side of the cam. Curious.
I'll be watching this thread as my 68 non-telescopic column is in a similar state of disassembly. I know I need a new cancelling cam. I wonder where I can buy the correct part?
