Need Help with behind dash wiring
Ok, I was hooking up my new radio in my '68 and ran into a strange problem. I went -
Car Radio
Yellow - Yellow
Black - Black
Grey - Red
I hooked the battery back up, turned the ignition to ON and nothing. I checked the fuse and it was fine. On a whim, I put the red and yellow together and the lights behind the gauges lit up and the radio turned on - with the ignition turned off. I get that the ignition wire is not working to turn on the radio, but why did the gauge lights come on? Also, how to do fix the issue?
Thanks, guys

Just because wires are the same color...
The yellow wire from the radio needs to go to constant 12V source..cigarette orange wire will work.
The red wire from the radio need to go to the yellow wire - the yellow wire from the car is +12 ignition.
The grey wire is instrument lights- if the radio has an input for this connection- Otherwire- cap off/wire wrap and not use.
The black wire is a ground...

On a factory radio you have the following wires at the radio connection:
Gray... instrument lamps gets power when you turn on the headlamps.
Black ground
Yellow power wire to the radio...
(I tried that link, it's not working).

The original radio didn't have a constant, just yellow power, black ground, and the grey for lights. There's a terminal labeled BAT on the fuse box you can get 12v constant from.
