Default 1976 Mufflers

I'm sure there is a post somewhere but i could not find it. I want to replace my mufflers with something that will give me some sound. The current mufflers are basically very quiet and I would prefer to have some deep sound at the idle and when I step on the gas. Not looking to replace the entire system, would like to just get an idea on replacement mufflers. Thanks

Flowmaster 50 series. Deep sound without being obnoxious.

Thanks Adam. I have been thinking flow master was the way to go. By any chance do you know which ones are the right one for a 1976? I can't believe the ones on the car are correct. I have attached a picture, they just don't look right.

If you want original, Flowmasters are not what you want. If you aren't worried about originality, then they are what I would suggest. Check out the Flowmaster website for a complete listing etc.

Your mufflers are mounted sideways... :/

No, I'm not looking for original, looking for some deep sound and correct fitting. I did not think they were mounted correctly. I appreciate all the information. If anyone knows which flow master 50 series fits correctly, please let me know. The flow master site offers numerous options all with a different setup and sizes. Just trying to take away the trial and error trying to get the right one. Thanks again.

I agree Bill, sound from the car is much more relaxing. Lol. Any idea on which 40's you put on? My give me a starting point on what part number to order to ensure proper fitment.

It appears that the inlet is 2.50 offset and the outlet is 2.50 centered.

I don't have a part number but "as a lark" a few years back, I replaced the muffler on my '99 V8 Grand Cherokee Limited with a Thrush Welded Muffler. The flowmasters I usually use were out of stock so I figured "what the heck, it's only my Winter Vehicle". They were like $40 each and they sound awesome, they look like a flowmaster and have the welded baffles inside.

I know what you may be thinking.... " Thrush!, those goofy, big old, turbo muffler / glasspack things from the 1970's and 80's??? " . . . I said the same thing.. but these are more "current".

These are not the ones, but , just to show the look etc:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/w...FYMlgQodrRQDgQ

It's been 4 years and they looked brand new still. This January, a guy ran a stop sign and totaled the Jeep, I found another super clean 1999 Limited V8 - Identical to our old one, and I'm going to go with the same exhaust. I was very pleased.

They sound like a flowmaster 50 series (but as with all mufflers, I always suggest that you try to hear them in person if possible). I can tell you, the gave the little 4.7 liter a very nice growl on the outside, but nothing crazy. Just enough for almost everyone at the gas station to say "man.... that sounds awesome" a few times a year..

They have mild interior resonance, but you can hear a nice healthy rumble. (I like to hear some noise but don't want conversation or the radio "droned out)". I would imagine in a Vette (with headers etc), they will be louder... ( I also have a Cat Converter since the car is a '99 and that may cut down the noise a bit as well).

My wife takes it to work, with coworkers / to meetings etc, so it's not "crazy loud". (In fact, the male co-workers keep telling her "how cool it is" to have a motorhead at home and to have all of these awesome sounding muscle cars around" !. One guy said "how come your Jeep sounds meaner then my C5??. (He's a nice guy, but he's correct; His stock C5 exhaust sounds like cr@p!)

- I told him: That I CAN do something about!

(I told the the others : "Sorry, I just can't get your Hyundai Santa Fe SUV's to sound like that... so stop asking" !!! )

Seriously though. I think they sound great. I'm getting a pair for the current '76 project as well.

I'm told that the original flowmaster patent expired and this is why these "copy cat" mufflers are now available - I'm not sure about that, but I can tell you, they do sound nice. Very deep, not "raspy" - just like a Flowmaster 50 series ( And I've used plenty of Flowmasters in the last 20+ years or so).

Also keep in mind (something that many people forget), that there are obviously different case sizes .... so, a 50 series in a small case is going to be louder than a 50 series "truck / SUV style" of muffler that may have a larger case size.

In my application, the mufflers I used are smaller than the stock Jeep muffler. They are appx the same size as the Corvette sized muffler you would need. I didn't want the larger "SUV" style mufflers - I wanted a little more sound...

The 40 series will be louder than the 50 series, and as Bill mentioned, you will end up with some drone inside the car. The 50 series we have are the Delta Flow 50s. I have no drone inside the car even with the windows up on the freeway and they are still pretty substantial sounding - occasionally setting off a car alarm while driving it

As far as what part number you'll need, you will have to measure your exhaust pipe - guessing it's 2.25" or 2.5" and then figure out if you need center in / out or what works for your need.

FYI - I suspect they mounted your mufflers like that because they wouldn't fit next to the spare tire carrier. I have our carrier removed, so there is plenty of room. Something to consider.

Adam

I personally like straight through design like manga flow or borla. Use to like flowmasters and will never go back. Magna flow 2.5 inch with 11 inch case mufflers sound great even better with an X pipe imo. Borlas are nice but not worth it in terms of price and the fact the muffler inter pipe is only 2.25 vs 2.5 straight through on the Magna's

Sorry for chiming in a little late here. Assuming that your exhaust pipes are otherwise stock, we generally recommend a 2.50" offset in/2.50" center out muffler for your car, as you mentioned earlier. The 50 Series Delta Flow part number for this configuration is 842551(stainless steel) or 942551(aluminized steel). If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to give us a call at 707-544-4761 or shoot us a PM. We'd be happy help.
