Default 2nd dumb electrical question for the 4th

I just replaced the ac/heater wiring harness on my 74 due to damage on the old one. after replacing it I realized I need to know why the damage occurred. the damage was a broken and half melted plastic connector at the AC relay, the wires were not melted or burn but the plastic housing around the terminated ends was 85% gone, looked to be disintegrated and or partially burnt like it got hot.
so if the relay went bad would the connector get hot or melt, I intend on replacing the relay anyway but figured I'd ask what causes wire end connectors to look like that.

Could be corrosion on the contacts, make sure everything is clean and making good solid contact.

Corrosion and the hi current thru the relay. I like to spray all contacts with WD40 to help long term.

I do the same thing,.....BUT on my '72 which is highly modified, and NOTHING is stock, wheels through roof, stem to stern......I have soldered all the wires to the heavy current relay tabs, directly....be a long day in hell before THAT fails....GOD, I'm lazy......
