74 convertible. Base engine, no p/s, no p/b, no a/c.
What is this component (see pic attached).
Passenger side, right above #2 cylinder, 3 wire connector plugged into back. Vac hose running to carb. Another port not capped.
Trying to figure out what it is and whether that nipple port is meant to be open
I'll go with the TCS solenoid.
(Transmission Controlled Spark, part of GM's power reduction system)
It would delay the vac-advance to the distributor until the engine reached a certain temp and/or the trans was in high gear
If you do a search there will be loads of info, just remember different years had slightly different systems (especially 71) and sb and BB were different
That is the transmission control spark solenoid. (TCS). The hose coming from the carb is correct. According to the 73-74 Judging Guide there should be a black hose going from the front of the white plastic T running back along the valve cover to the vacuum diaphragm on the distributor.

Jim

any pointers/pics/diagrams showing what port on the distributor is the 'vacuum diaphragm' ?

Here are a copy photos of where the hose coming from the TCS go back along the top of the valve cover and connects to the vacuum advance on the distributor. The first picture is of my restored 73 L48. You can't see the TCS because it is under the AIR Pump hose and Air Cleaner snorkel. But you see how the hose (with white stripe) travels back and connects up to the vacuum module on the distributor. The second picture is from an original 73 L82. It should be the same for your 74L82. The third photo is much better for you to see. I notice that your 74 doesn't have the original Dual Snorkkel Air Cleaner assembly, so your engine may have other modifications that didn't require the vacuum hose going back to the distributor.
