Default Car will not start

1969 corvette L46 350/350

I am at my wits end with this issue so I thought I would bring it up to the forum.

History ..

I have put in new valve seals and adjusted the valves while the engine was not running. I have taken the heads off .. but that's about it as far as engine dissassembly. Engine was running prior to all of this.

I installed a new Delco Coil, points and condensor, spark plug wires as well as new spark plugs.

Timing is set at 8 degrees BTDC .. set while turning the engine over using an induction timing light.

but car just will not start...not even close

If I adjusted the valves incorrectly would that cause my engine not to start.. (No compression?)

Any suggestions as far as trouble shooting?

Thanks for your help

I assume you installed a new distributor rotor, correct? I ask this because many years ago I had a friend that did a carb. overhaul and tuneup at the same time and the engine wouldn't start.
Yep, he forgot to install the dist. rotor.

Distributor put back in the right orientation, at TDC? Wires in correct firing order? Had that same issue on one of mine, the distributor was one tooth off.

basics , 1. check compression, 2. must have fuel delivery, 3.must have spark, verify each of these. ... after that it is pretty much timing of the spark via the distributer.
beyond that we need more details what does it do when you crank engine turn over slow ? fast?

When I crank.. it turns over moderately fast..which could mean that compression is low...due to valves not closing.. prior to attempting to start I just readjusted all of the rocker arms so they had some looseness in order to ensure I had compression .. but that might not have been the right thing to do..

I get a pop when I attempted to start this last time.

Timing light says I am 8 degrees BTDC..induction light tells me I have current to the plug.. I dump a small amount of gas into the carb before I attempt to start so I assume it's getting to the cylinders.

I finally got the car started... distributor was 180 degrees out...I rotated the spark plug wires on the distributor 180 degrees and the car started....

Thanks everyone for your help

That used to happen to me all the time. Now I mark the rotor position and bump the engine to get it pointing right at a terminal post then take a pic before I pull the distributor. It saves alot of guessing when I put it back together and gets me close enough that it starts everytime without worrying about timing itbefore I start it. Then re time it of course

Congrats on solving your own issue

One time or another, hell I made that into a habit. I couldn't get that right if if I pulled it out and put it right back in. I was really bad at getting it tdc compression stroke and not exhaust. Ive got more problems than hillary on truth serum.
