Default 1975 front bumper retainer

I'm in the middle of replacing the front bumper cover, and of course 80% of the studs broke so I'm going to order a new set. Now this is where I'm getting thrown off. I'm finding a 73_74 3 piece set that is identical to the pieces I removed. The 75 and up set has 5 retainers for the front bumper cover.

I know they will both fit, but my question is why would I have the wrong retainers on my car. If they were replaced by the PO then it happened over 30 years ago as the last two guys never touched the car. Is it possible to come like that from the factory?

I also am wondering if it would be better to have the 3 piece top retainers to assist with the play is will need when lining up the bumper.

I used the stock ones i took off of my 75.
The studs all broke off so i ordered new studs--replacements are to short so just welded 1 1/2" long studs in-place.
My Eckler Front bumper was a 30 year old one that never got installed, the glass by the mounting area was much thicker and needed the extra length.

I believe mine was the 5 piece, yes it makes it easier to adjust.
What kind of cover? Glass, flex,or factory?

I'm using a stock '78 so it is the flex. The one piece retainer is cheaper, the 3 piece seems better due to the play is will gain. I'm going to order it tomorrow so looking for input tonight.

I ordered the 5 piece set from Willcox. Called and asked about shipping options since the website only gave one option. Awesome customer service, awesome company. I was swayed to start spending all my money there because of his support for this forum and it's members.

Looking forward to getting this bumper on and ordering more parts with Willcox!

I tried the 3 piece set up on my 76 when replacing it with a fiberglass bumper, would not work, went with the indivudal pieces, worked great, little harder to hold while tightening, but work good. YES, Willcox is the way to go for parts, good service and fair pricing.

I used the individual ones as well when I replaced mine on my '75. Worked great.

Amazing service by Wilcox. Bumper cover is on, the 5 piece set was cake to use, with the exception of bending the top center just right so the studs went through. I got it close enough, then used pliers to pull it in once the two center were secured.

Happy to have this done, I'm a teacher and wanted to knock it out before I go back to work this week and wilcox had it here in under 48 hours.
