I am looking to spruce up the underside of my hood and have been unable to find anything I really like. Corvette America has the ABS plastic hood liner with the embossed crossed flags that I have been looking at. Has anyone purchased these? Looking to see what kind of quality etc.
Thanks
Larry

Just so you are not left out there hanging, I purchased one from Gonzo before he passed away, but have not installed it yet. I will once I am convinced I will not be changing my hood.
There are places that still sell the original 'fiberglass' ones. I just didn't want to go that route.

Larry..The ABS hood liner does look nice..but for 200 bucks over what a standard under hood insulation kit runs.(IF your '74 needs a new one) andconsidering few people will ever admire it..I'm not sure the value is there?..
Ultimately it's your car and your money-decision..
i have seen the corvette america item in their catalog..You might inquire of them how it holds up..how it's installed etc..There was a thread several weeks back by newbvette asking a similar question..Not sure what if anything he found..Jim

Thanks for your responses. The hood underside is the ugliest part of my car. I may just paint the underside, and powdercoat the hood latches.
Thanks again.

Larry..Gracious!..I think your engine and underhood look great..!Jim
I purchased the abs hoodliner. I thought it was great until it started warping. The top left and right sections have warped pretty bad and don't stay in place any more. I have been trying to figure out a way to fix it or maybe cut of the top pieces.
I have a thick piece of heat resistant rubber that was painted with red crossed flags and the word "CORVETTE" on it. The previous owner did it. My car no longer uses the induction system The piece fits great and has proven very durable. My car has headers and side pipes and it gets hot under there. There is no clearance issue since it also has an Edelbrock performer manifold and Edelbrock carb with a drop down air cleaner.
I recently was going to replace my liner with an OEM type liner but quickly realized that no one sells one that is molded like the original. Decided to try to salvage mine. Removed it, laid it out on the lawn and soaked it through a couple of times from both sides with a garden hose. Hit it with a foaming carpet cleaner a couple of times and rinsed it out thoroughly again from both sides. Smoothed the fibers down as best I could and let it dry in the sun. I hit it with some flat black spray dye, sprayed the rusted retainers with underhood black and reinstalled it. Came out pretty good, the photo really doesn't do it justice.
I removed the underhood fiberglas insulation altogether and painted the underside of the hood with a flat black heat resistant engine paint. It looks much better now than having that piece of insulation stuck to the back side of the hood. An added benefit is better underhood flow of air keeping the engine compartment a little cooler.

Thanks. I will shy away from that and will be looking to do something different.

Actually I want to revamp this a bit. I have fixed my abs liner so it now stays so much better. Basically, you need to use a heat gun on the abs plastic liner so it forms to the hood. I also ended up using heavier duty magnets on top of what was provided. This is much better and I am happy with it. I do wish I knew all of this before hand though as then it would have looked even better.
On a side note, I will be replacing it at some point with a new hood liner that I will be building made out of aircraft insulation. I can now make these and they look really good. These are similar to what Gonzo used to make. May he rest in piece.
