Does the tach work when you spin the distributor end of the cable or does it just move (bounce around)?
Use an electric drill and spin the cable, if the tach is working, the problem is with the drive gear in the distributor. You can pull the distributor and replace them.

Check the connection on the back of the tach. The drive cable must be fully seated in the tach head.

What is 'it'? do you mean when you spin the cable the tach needle moves or when you spin the cable, the cable moves?

then either your cable is not seated and the cable housing is not screwed in tight to the distributor, or your gearing is stripped.
the would be part #577, or #586 in the chart above.

Stripped distributor shaft gear and cross gear are a common ailment on these. I've replaced the shaft and gear twice and the cross gear at least 4 times on my '71 which I've owned for 45 years. I even clocked the dist. when I first got it so the cable would run parallel to the firewall out of the dist.
