Default '81 - Removing Half Shafts - Need Help

Quick question because I'm losing my mind here. Diff making noise so I'm removing it to inspect (don't get me started... will be posting a curse filled walk through when it's all said and done).

Anyways, I'm at the point where I'm removing the half shaft and it has these bolts on it:

Cursing ensues because I have **** for hand me down tools. Fine, go out and buy these:

Now the fucked up part; the 1/4" (also labeled 6mm) is too small (can't hammer it on) and the 9/32" (also labeled 7mm) is too big (as in it pretty much spins freely).

WHAT. THE. ****? Help? Anyone? I'd like to think I'm not an idiot and that this should be a very simple task, but it's proving otherwise.

Try a 1/4 inch 12 point socket. No hammer should be used to get socket on bolt.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like someone else tried the wrong socket, and rounded it. 1/32 is not much of a difference. What about a piece of aluminum foil in the 9/32 to try and tighten it?

I'd put new ones on anyway, for next time.

I'd say crappy tools being used . A quality 12 point needed.

You need a regular 12 pt socket not the spline socket.

6 mm = 0.235 inches which is smaller than a true 1/4 inch (0.25) socket which could explain why your SAE/metric socket was too tight. You may what to try a standard SAE socket set.

So as a few of you pointed out... proper tools. Wasn't aware that what I got wasn't a 12point set. Went out and bought a crappy socket set and the 1/4" 12point did the job flawlessly. Now to figure out what a spline set is actually used for...

It was a spline head bolt someone who didn't know what they were doing boogered up because no 12 point will fit it. Just did the u-joints on my 80 and found they were spine head bolts.
