I just fitted a new starter, the original lasted 37 years, not bad, kudos to Delco.
However the new one did about 2 dozen starts and then the housing broke from the bolt holes to the nose and the starter is dead, the guy has offered me a replacement or a refund but I am taking the refund as the housing is alloy and just too thin and has no strengthening ribs on it like the original had, see pics below.
Now I cant find a starter that looks like it will last more than 10 minutes, has anyone else had this problem and if so, what starter did you use and where did you get it from?
Broken noses on starter occur when shims aren't used, or proper amount of shims not used.
Your original starter may not have required one, but replacement ones usually do.
Shims were not required, I measured the gear clearance very accurately and did not require shims. I reused the same bolts which were original so I don't think they had any part in it, they were torqued to specification but I am curious to know what you mean by BRACE? The guy that sold the starter to me told me I should use a rear brace, my car does not have one and if it did I wouldn't have a clue where it bolts to on the engine, more information please.

The brace attaches to the starter and to the engine block using the same bolt as the engine ground cable. If you're missing the brace you most likely missing the solenoid heat shield to.
I don't know if you still have the original or if youc an get it back from a trade in. I got my starter rebuilt to better than knew and it works great now and fits right. Just an option possibly.
It was actually same price as new one to get mine rebuilt.
