engine sputtering issue

engine sputtering issue
hello,
researching to find possible causes for some sputtering that the car is doing.
1981 4-speed
all stock engine
choke is dialed off so that it doesn't engage
engine still starts and idles and revs good
under load it sometimes but not always does this sputtering thing. it will stop after a minute or two and run great. sometimes it comes back in a ride and sometimes it doesn't. tach jumps during the sputters too. sometimes I can push through it with more right foot like today.
replaced the in carb fuel filter to no change.
don't drive it much but enough that its not stale/old gas.
any ideas out there.

disconnected the EGR valve at the recommendation of a friend of Lars (Henry) and went on a 20 min drive. the issue has not returned. going to drive a bit tomorrow as another test.
if still not having the issue again, assume a bad EGR?

My first thought for a "sputtering" (misfire) would be ignition, namely spark plugs/wires
