I am installing a '68 lookalike Bluetooth radio - I need to upgrade the kick panel speakers to handle the 180 watt radio - can anyone verify what size speakers (6 X 9?, 5 X 7?) fit behind the kick panels w/o modification?
I had bought the larger speakers, then found out they were too big to fit in my 76, yours might be different, did they have the dash speakers in 68 like the 76 does? no kick panel speakers originaly but new radio will handle 4 speakers, soooooooooooooo.
6.5" Rounds are about the biggest that will fit in there, and they should be the shallow depth type - and even then, some on this board have told of having to trim slightly on the speaker frames.
I just put Rockford Fosgate's in my '69 to go with a new Retrosound 25W RMS per channel stereo (also old style look, but with Bluetooth etc.). Didn't require any cutting, and they could have fit behind the existing kick panels, but I opted to make a cut-out for them, and then attach the R-F faceplates on top of the kick plates (no worries, though: the kick plates were in rough shape already).
They sound "OK", but lacking in bass for my taste. Not surprising though. I may opt for the low profile powered-amp sub-woofer that R-F makes to go in the rear compartment - maybe next spring.
Want to see what the new fronts sound like on the road with the tops off.
These also came with satellite tweeters that I have mounted on the dash in the A-pillar corners. I'm thinking they will help direct some of the highs towards the listening zones while driving.

Removed and saved the '77 original panels and modified a new set to take the 6.5" Memphis Audio speakers that I wanted.
IMO putting a good speaker behind the drilled plastic panel is a waste. The lack of acoustic transparency compared to a good conventional speaker grill is going to degrade the sound. You may even just have an annoying buzzing panel at the loud listening levels needed with the tops off at 65.
I installed 6.5" Kicker speakers in the kick panels on my '81. Although the year models are different I guess it is possible that you can take something from my thread....
[QUOTE=tgaudlip;1593404997]No - 68 did not have dash speakers only the kick panel speakers. It seems like a pretty tight space.
My 68 only has a dash speaker. No kick panel speakers. It was equipped with a AM only radio.
For speakers personally, for the best sound go with a nice set of components where mid and tweets are separate. I think Kicker and Infinity have very nice shallow 6" speakers.

Someone's probably been in there already. 68-9 did not come with dash speakers, the dash does not have the holes for them like the 70 and up do.
Just got Polks put in. Had the smaller one in before, they were awful.
Anyone having done a modification to the bird cage behind the kick panel to accomodate speakers with larger mounting depth? Beside the work needed to modify the birdcage- is there any disadvantages for doing this beside the car not being orginal anymore?
