Cerakote materials came in today. Instructions say to blast parts to be coated. Does anyone know if this is mandatory? I got the C3 coating good to 1700 degrees.
Anyone done this yet?
Every part that's powder-coated needs to be perfectly clean and have a good (blasted ) profile so the stuff can bond with it , doesn't matter if its a ceramic heat proof or just a nice colour . I'm talking of even handling the blasted pieces with those disposable examination gloves so no oil from your skin can contaminate the metal.
Then there's de-gassing of used parts to get residual oil out of the metal etc.
I had a lot of trim parts and 2 sets of wheels powder coated on my 77 and I got very familiar with how the guys did them .
A friend of mine is a certified Cerakaote applicator. He coated a set of headers for myself and another friend. Within a month rust came through the coating of both sets. I'm not very happy with this product as the applicator knew what he was doing.
I would send the headers off to have them ceramic coated. OR use the VHT ceramic high heat paint.
By the way the black ceramic coating used on the Hooker brand headers is crap too. Simply my .02.
