Default Electric Exhaust Cut-out

Has anyone out there added an electric exhaust cut-out to their exhaust system? I have a 1970 corvette and prefer to not add side pipes but still want it to be loud. It seems like a nice option to have it loud on demand and still be able to hear myself think when I want to. Just curious how well they work and hold up.

It's a little expensive, but totally AWESOME! Siting at a light, you push a toggle, rap it up and it sounds like all hell breaking loose, people are turning their heads. looking around, you hit the toggle again, and all is quiet. Same thing on the freeway, cruising along, then hit the toggle, downshift and wind it out.

You can also partially open the butterflies and it sounds like glass packs.

Yes that may be a better question that I should have asked. I am looking for feedback on manufacturers and quality of the product. This is the first time I have posted anything. Would it made more sense to have asked this in a forum group?

I am going to install these eventually too. So far my research says QTP is the brand to go with but they all can and do have failure problems.

The problem with the butterflies is they leak after a while ... similar to a small pinhole in a regular exhaust not much but annoying. The Dougs cut outs are self cleaning and a knife style plate that gives full flow and a complete blank off when closed. I'm going to use these with mine, I may also incorporate them into a set of side pipes that I can turn on and off.

I installed mine about 8 years ago, don't remember the brand, but they cost about $400 back then, and have been totally reliable since.

I have been messing w/ an idea that's been around for a while-

Want to have both- quiet and loud and maybe somewhere in between-and I think I've got it figured out w/ a toggle of a switch.

Not exactly a new idea...these were only $5.95 back in the day!!!

Here's a newer version -but for a motorcycle-

Here's what I am working on-looks like it will work...

I will have a straight pipe 2½" inside a 3½" outer pipe. The straight pipe will be opened/closed by a QTP electric cutout motor w/ a powdercoated CNC 6061 Aircraft Aluminum Body. I'll be able to vary the opening and sound level by a toggle switch-actually using a sunroof switch from a BMW that depicts open and close plus it momentary.

Just a mock-up...I'll have to cut the pipes down about 18"- but have figured out the mounting of the motor and pipe inside a pipe.

I'll use some rings -fit inside the 3½" pipe -that will be drilled- to flow the muffled sound in the outer pipe- packing inside a perfed stainless screen -basically making the exhaust flow in a spiral pattern around the inner straight pipe when the valve is closed. Plus the 2½" straight will act as a large chamber-also helping w/ the sound.

For the motor- I used some bronze valve guides-cut down and stepped to hold the stainless steel butterfly in place. Just need to make some standoffs to mount the motor. The motor is mounted right at the turnout-hopefully adding life to the cutout motor further away from heat.

Here's some pics-

Richard

I'll be running these under the fiberglass covers that are chromed...I just spaced them out w/ some square tubing to give me the extra clearance...

Open and close switch-

Just put these on mine. VERY nice construction. Work excellent, just ask the clown in the BMW on the phone next to me....

Interesting thread..A bit of noise is good when controlled..The JEGS and systems from Dougs look well made ..The ones with the Y diverter interconnected to the exhaust pipes off the headers would be my choice..OR I suppose I could slip a good CD in my new sound system and fire up the sound system with authentic sounds of great running, uncorked V8 chevy's on the line at WOODBURN Drag strip..before they drop the flag..jim
