What has been used in a '79? I'm open to either modifying the front turn signal housings or installing behind the grilles.

I did these on my '76. I used clear casting resin to make a front lens and some aluminum to make a mounting bracket for some really intense COB LED's. I sprayed frosting paint over the resin to make it not so clear. They work pretty well.

I added a fifth row and put the lights behind that.

I have used both methods over the years.

Wiring for the DRLs.

Fused LED control toggle switch. This is not a simple matter of turning on your parking lights.

I picked up a DRL module from Daniel Stern Lighting that uses the parking lights on bright.
Easy install and I think the price was reasonable.

Kevin,
The DRL-1 is the system I am using on my 1974. Where is this Daniel Stern company located?

Yes, I noticed your instruction sheet is the same one on Daniel Stern's website.
I don't have an address, but he is in Washington State.

Are they considered DRL if you have to use a separate switch to turn them on? I always assumed DRL's come on when you start your car.

These are fully automatic. On when you turn on the key, change to regular park lights when you turn on headlights, cancel when you use the signals. the webpage has a full explanation. http://dastern.torque.net/Mods/DRL/DRL1.html

If you do a search on the forum for "Daniel Stern" you will see his name referenced in many posts.

I assume it must be a law in Canada and here in the US the LED's must cancel when using the turn signal? Personally I find it more of a distraction seeing an on coming vehicle with one of the LED cords/lines out. It took me a while to realize they come back on when finished with the turn. Is it a safety concern?

They are wired that way. I chose a shut-off option via the LED toggle switch.

They've done that because they're getting double duty (turn signal and DRL) from the same bulb. I agree about the distraction--I've seen a few new vehicles that do this.

Mine will come on with ignition and turn off when the headlights are turned on. How? Simple. SPST relay. Common relay terminal to IGN power. Normally closed contact to DRLs. Relay coil connected to headlamp low beams and ground.

i bought one of those units DRL-1 from ecklers, worked couple of weeks, then failed, burnt out.
as i'm from downunder, contacted webelectric, the manufacturer, but as they wont sell outside of USA, they wouldn't offer any help.

so i designed my own setup using the front park lights on my '72.
turns on the 'turn filament' fulltime.
couple relays, handful diodes, and a capacitor, works great.
they both turn off when indicating, and come on bout 5sec after.
i'm using the brightest filament globe i could get, but will replace with a cree led soon.

here's a link to a oz forum with a bit more info that i put up couple years ago

Your general design won the competition and the spouse approved. Beyond the excellent utility and aesthetics I appreciate how you did not modify the stock components in any noticeable way. It is also a great project to improve my plastic fabrication skills.

That was a nice way to do the DRL conversion. I would not have done it that way but it is a nice job.

This may help with the fabrication of separate lights.

And a controller if your using separate lights.
