Default differential carrier ID

with out knowing the numbers on my differential case (and I'm not gonna go jack it up and look on Christmas eve) is there any way to tell what series carrier I have in my case, I know it s a 3.08 gear and its a '74 differential. at what point do the carriers jump from series to series I assume with a gears like a 4.11-4.56 its a 4 series carrier? Just want to know if I can put 3.36 or 3.55 onto my existing carrier with out any problems or having to use ring gear spacers?

all 3 series carriers will take the 3.36 or 3.55 without any spacers

so are you implying my '74 3.08 differential carrier is a 3 series? Am I correct to assume if it's a gear starting with a 3 (like 3.08) its a 3 series and if it's a 4.11 gear its a 4 series carrier?

I just know when I was younger I had a 71 nova with a 10 bolt open rear and I wanted to put a new 4.11 gear in with a used posi carrier I bought and the mechanic that did it told me the carrier series was to small but he was able to do it with a ring gear spacer. also told me never to bolt slicks on the car because of the spacer?

Tom's makes a 4.11 thick gear that will work with a three series carrier if you are looking to go that way. All of the 3.08 to 3.73 gears will work with your current carrier.
