Default 72 BB header problem.

I have a 502 in my car and have Hooker Headers 2123-1 Moroso solid mounts and an Energy trans mount. The car has a 4 speed. The p/s header fits fine but the d/s is close to the floor. I can't get the collector to go on. It seems the engine is about 1 1/2 inches to high. I had the same setup in a 77 and didn't have any problems. Any ideas.

Are the mounts the same height as the original rubber mounts? I've seen a couple different thickness (height).

Non raised exhaust ports?

Did you use the plate that came with the transmission mount.

No plate. Exhaust fits fine on Pass side. I am sure they are raised. But I had the same in a 77 and the headers fit fine. Same brand

I hate to say this but is it the header? Is the collector welded on properly? If it's tilted up just a bit it's going to give you a problem. It wouldn't be the 1st time a set of headers had a manufacturing quality issue.

In that pic, it looks like the header flange looks like it at a angle, compared to the long pipes that are welded up to it...

I noticed that to guys. The top of the flange is tilted in. What I think about doing is cut the collector back about 1 1/2 to 2 inches and then re weld the collector ring back on at a slight downward angle. That should give me clearance...I hope.

Is the engine level on the mounts? When I installed my new engine I was having problems with the drivers side headers being too close to the frame. While standing if front of the car, hood off, I noticed that the air cleaner appeared to have a little lean to it. A bubble level confirmed it and after a little work it sat level and the header to frame clearance got way better.

Well here's what I came up with. Don't mind my crappy weld. It will be all ground down and made nice. Now I have to plumb the exhaust, I may use the flex pipe or I may figure something out with pipe. Either way it will be wrapped and some insulation on the floor. I used flex pipe on a 77 I had that had a 540 in it and they worked fine.

Are you using the taller solid motor mounts or the short ones ? And or is you block a tall deck by chance ?

Block isn't a tall deck. The passenger side is fine. Others have had the same problem with the d/s. I don't think it's the mounts.
