Default Heat & Sound Insulation questions

I started installing this supper sticky sheets of foil backed insulation by Eastwood on the floor of my 71 coupe. I would like to apply this stuff everywhere I can but I'm worried how things will fit back in place after I'm all done. I've been heating up the sheets to make them fit all the contours, but I can't get that perfect and pretty job that is shown on all those custom car shows on TV - does that matter?

Do you cut out the insulation where the seat tracks contact the floor or will things be ok if I just bolt the tracks sitting on top of the insulation?

In our 1971 coupe, we used the "FatMat" from Eastwood... then I put "Reflectix" over the top of that. Carpet fit well right over the top, however, I did have to trim off the jute padding on the back of the carpet in a couple spots.... to get the rubber push-in fasteners in the back wall..... to get the footman loops in for the T-top straps.... and down by the dimmer switch.

Nice photos old GTO, many thanks!
I plan on taking the Eastwood heat and sound shield up the firewall to just under where the top dash fits in under the windshield.
A lot of sound could be coming through the storage boxes as they have their bottoms exposed under the car. One has a cardboard tray, any thoughts?
Did you install the insulation under the rear deck behind the rear window? Was there any need to cut out the insulation where the seat tracks bolt down?

So far, I haven`t bolted the seats down yet. They sit in there nice, but I`m not sure if I`ll need longer bolts or not. I don`t expect so. I left the mat off the firewall, it stops about the same as the carpet. There`s too much going on there with cables, wiring, hoses, etc. passing through. Once the car is done & on the road... I may change my mind on that, and try to add some later.
For the rear compartment, I did the bottom of the lids. I didn`t do under the rear deck... thought it would interfere with the window storage tray.

Great info! I have all of the dash parts out along with all the plastic venting tubes so access is easy. I need to stop that heat getting through the firewall. Because of the sidepipes I wish I could get the doors covered on the inside.

Please do not allow the sound deadener layer to be sandwiched between the seat tracks and the floor pan around the bolt attachments. You do not want to have any compressible materials in your joint, as it can affect torque and clamp load over time and vibration. (same goes for carpet flaps, etc.)

Nice pix...may I ask what, if anything, did you use to secure the Reflectix down? As far as I remember it has not adhesive. I am thinking about adding this to mine if it helps with heat.

How does the FatMat compare to Dynamat or other alternatives?

I used a simple spray on adhesive from Lowes....I sprayed it onto the back of the reflectix, then stuck it to the top of the Fat Mat. Worked quite well!

Same thickness, does the same job, but MUCH easier on the wallet!

I only did the foot wells to rear bulkhead for heat.

Being a convertible it's loud anyway. As said make sure the seat tracks are clear.

Has anyone used anything from Lowes or Home Depot or somewhere else? If so, what was it? I think the FatMat looks good and may be in my plans for the near future.

I used " Frost King " from Lowes. Its a closed cell foam with foil back. Its $15.00 for a 1'-0 x 15'-0 if I remember right. Its made for wrapping a/c ducts. I used in in a Porsche 928 and really helped with noise...heat is not a problem in those cars so not sure if it helps with heat.

I am using it in my 72 and will put it in my 70 as well.

Just a thought if your not up to spending hundreds.

Dean,

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. Heat does not seem to be a problem in my 81, I'm looking more for sound deadening purposes.

I used Ceramic Lizzard Skin spray on first, then a Fat Max knock off product. Worked great and easy to apply. Just prep it well first, its kind of like bodywork. But, its a side pipe car and the exhaust makes a bit of noise. A trick I discovered for putting the carpet it was let it sit in the sun for a couple of hours before install, then once you get it glued down, use bags of pea gravel to hold it down in the tub. It makes sure it pushes everything into every litte corner. Good luck.

Correction...this is what I used.
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Frost-King-...lation/1081449

Sorry for the confusion. I looked closer and the first ad I put up was a fiberglass and foil where as I used a closed foam with adhesive and foil. It conforms very well and if the surface is clean...will stick well.

I used 2 layers on the firewall ( I was getting lots of heat ) will see how it works for that when the car is on the road. I think I used 6 rolls and did all the floor, doors and roof.
