Default 1972 tilt column rebuild.

The tilt column in my car does not pivot up and down. I have it apart now and can't seem to see what makes it pivot when the the rod is moved.

Also the bearings need to be replaced. Any thing on you tube or and article on how to do this. I haven't done a tilt column rebuild in about 30 years and need something to guide me. Also parts...where can I get them.

Everything you ever wanted to know about steering-
Still some parts out there- takes a lot of searching. Keep in mind that most all GM steering columns are close to the same. A search for xxx part for a Corvette might have no results, but the same search using a more generic term like "Chevrolet Car" might have a bucket full

Thanks I was just looking at that site.

I removed the long spring and now it pivots fine. What does that spring do.

Long spring with a cap that is removed by 1/4 turn? And greasy as heck? THat one supplies the tension so the column won't fall or flop around when the lever is pulled back to release (adjust) the column tilt.

Why would the tilt not work while that was in? Once I pulled that out the tilt worked.

No clue. That's supposed to be all that spring does. Are you trying to move it without the steering wheel? That spring is pretty stout and with no wheel, you won't have much leverage.

The upper bearing lists a bearing , race and upper bearing inner race seat. I have the race and then another piece that looks like the race but has a split in it.
How are put in in relation to the bearing. The lower bearing seems to ride on the tilt shaft. I don't have the inner race seat that they show on Jims site.

I'm going from memory- and it's been a while. The race without the split goes on after the bearing, then the split one goes on last, then the short fat spring for the cancel cam.

I also have a washer that I think goes over the split one. Then the spring and lock plate and c clip.
Like I said earlier I did these 30 years ago. It is coming back the more I read up on them.

I appreciate your help.
