First of all, thanks for the advise I got when choosing an engine combo. Took the L48 and vortec headed it with a comp 268 and forged pistons. Got the first drive today, and HOLY. CRAP this thing moves! Even got some cheers from bystanders! I was surprised when I let off the throttle at about 60 to see the front end come down. Qjets forever!
Of course I can't forget to mention Lars and the Qjet papers...What can I say that hasn't been said. Thank you Lars.
Can you put together a final parts list for us that are thinking about it, but have no idea what to do?
Even going to an engine shop is intimidating when you know absolutely nothing.
I'll see if I can put together some kind of parts list, but it will certainly be incomplete as some of the parts I used I got at a hardware store, and I am a terrible record-keeper. Horsepower? Don't know but I would guess somewhere around or under 300.
First, let me say I saw some dyno sheets with my cam and similar heads putting up around 340 hp.
The swap isn't a big deal. About the only thing besides the heads, intake and gaskets were intake bolts, valve covers, offset air cleaner and throttle bracket. The factory air cleaner was way too tall, despite me buying the shortest Intake I could find. I had an Edelbrock air cleaner but it hit the distributor. Getting belts was a pain, but honestly it was the worst part.
The vortec swap is not a big deal to do and worth it.
No, I didn't use Edelbrock anything. I tried to use an Edelbrock air cleaner but it hit my distributor. That's when I got the Speedway offset air cleaner.
I used the Summit intake and gaskets, valve covers from Amazon, throttle bracket from Speedway, and some misc bits from a hardware store.
