Default C3 Rear Bumper Finish

I have a 1973 C3 that I'm thinking about having the rear bumpers re-chromed, but before I do, I was wondering if anyone has seen this type of condition/finish on chrome. I've tried chrome polish of various sorts, and none of them seem to be able to take off the imperfection. It appears to be speckled inside the chrome. The surface is smooth (you can't feel the marks). I'm thinking the chrome is just 'breaking down' and nothing will help other than re-plating the bumpers.

Any thoughts?

My dad learned and did chrome in the navy, he would go on about it, the different types, prep involved, etc,

Anyway, i dont know whats causing your issue but a good shop will have the bumpers looking likely better than gm did, they will do better prep and base plating.

Thanks. I think eventually I'll have to go the re-plating route, but was just curious what it is in the finish, and if anyone had ever seen it before. I could understand it being rust, but it's smooth to the touch.

You can try a mild rubbing compound found in auto part stores. Use a rotary buffer to apply and buff out.

If that doesn't work, you can always get it re chromed by a specialist.

0000 steel wool. if that doesn't take out the imperfections then it needs rechromed

and before anyone asks yes I have used it on chrome rims and it does work

Did you try Turtle wax brand chrome polish? It has ammonia in it I believe. Very inexpensive, removes rust and typically does a great job.

Yeah, that was the first polish I used. Didn't help. Thanks for the reply.

I bought some rear bumpers that were advertised as "near mint" and that's how mine look as well. I only paid the equivalent of $75 U.S. for them so I'm not too upset that the seller misrepresented them.
