Default AC restoration issues

So my AC hasn't worked since I bought he car and I am trying to get it back in shape. I took it all apart and Found this broken part behind the heater core. Not sure how this is supposed to be. Or what it's supposed to do. Any help?

Flapper door tucked up under the passenger's side fender. If memory serves, they are not being reproduced. Corvette salvage or eBay may be your best choice. IIRC the door is open for fresh air and closed for AC.

My 71 BB's A/C did not work & the compressor was frozen. I opted to replace the entire system with Vintage Air. Forum members said the original A/C did not cool the car as well as new systems & the Vintage Air replaced all the complicated vacuum controls with electronics. For me, the $1300. for Vintage Air was the best way to go.
Before you dig too deep, make sure everything in your system is working properly.
Just my opinion.

so if I can't get one, if I make sure it stays closed, I should be ok?

If you AC is not working, meaning non functional, that door has nothing to do with it. All that is doing is opening and closing to direct air flow. First thing I would do is have the system pressure checked. If you don't have Freon, your compressor will not engage. The shop will remove any Freon and than do their checks and tell you what's is wrong. From there you can do the math and have it repaired, and changed to 134 or recharge with R12.

My AC was non functional as in no compressor, etc. I am doing new heater core, had evaporator core cleaned, new blower, new compressor and hoses etc. it won't be r12

It was suggested to me a few yrs ago on the forum to go to Michaels (the craft store) because they sold material to use for the flapper door. I did that but didn't think it would work too good. I went to my local hardware store thats been in business for like forever, explained what I needed, and the guy went up in the attic storage and produced a sheet of rubber that has seemed to work out. He didn't even charge me.
