Default Tell me about your aftermarket exhaust! Looking for advice.

I've got a backfire at idle on my 1982, and found the issue. A few of my air injector tubes connecting to the exhaust manifold are cracked. My question: Do I grind all the air injector ports off completely, and weld the holes shut, or go for an all new exhaust system?

The only thing currently not stock with my exhaust are the mufflers. They're Magnaflow, and seem to sound and fit nice.

If I go with an all aftermarket system, I'd like it to fit without any major modifications to the body/frame, look OEM from the outside, and not cause issues with the computer and the CFI. I don't want something overly loud either- I plan to drive this car regularly in the summer. I don't know much about true dual vs. single into dual, or SST vs steel. I also don't care if I keep the catalytic converter. Iowa doesn't smog test.

Let me know what you guys think!

I have a newly built 454 with Hooker Super Comp coated headers, mated to a Pypes exhaust system with Pypes mufflers. The system was easy to install, and took about 15 minutes, with the exception of the header to the X pipe. I had to cut and weld to make that fit. Still, not too bad.

I will warn you, I got the quietest mufflers that Pypes makes and it has a drone at certain RPM's. Livable, but I want a turbo muffler that won't hurt performance.

1980 vette. 350 HP 390 tq. I have headman full length headers, and a full true dual 2.5" system to the back from Bairs. They are a quite factory type muffler. sounds great nice low rumble, not a drone. Installed a true dual trans cross member out of a 79 vette.

Are you running a Bairs muffler? I was thinking about an oval turbo muffler, or one of the more popular mufflers, but not sure. I took mine out just a few minutes ago, with the T-tops and back window off, and man, does it ever sound good. It's a whole lot less drone(Y) too haha go figure.

I put a true dual exhaust designed for a 74 on my 78 with Flowmaster mufflers. It's badass.

Yes they supplied the mufflers. They look like a turbo muffler, but without the annoying sound. I told them i wanted a quieter exhaust.

headers will give more upper rpm power for sure but on the cheap it is completely possible to weld the tubes shut.

Here is mine.

it all depends on how much you want to spend and how much work you want to do.If you have a stock motor you have 200 hp.The best exhaust that you could put on may give you 220 hp.I would weld up the pipes like what dynra rockets did .gut the cat or put in a replacement pipe. And I would replace your valve cover gaskets ,looks like you are leaking

I appreciate the replies! Maybe I'll just have the holes welded up until I decide on a total exhaust makeover. As far as hollowing out the cat, could I take it to an exhaust shop to have them put a pipe in its place or is that frowned upon?

Yes... it's very leaky. I've got many gaskets on their way (oil pan, valve cover, transmission pan, etc.) in hopes of stopping at least some of my larger leaks.

I've got a growing list of things to do to the car, and it's hard knowing what should take priority. I'll probably pull the exhaust manifolds off first to take them to a welder, as a start!

A free flowing exhaust will help with Hp and MPG, then once you decide to upgrade the motor a bit more. Maybe mild cam, intake carb. The exhaust will already be there.

Where did you buy your setup? Did you install it yourself? Is what you have similar to what Buccaneer did in this thread? I really like the looks of this, although I don't see where the oxygen sensor would mount.

t a turbo muffler that won't hurt performance
dynomax super turbo or walker quiet flow

Hooker super turbos are similar nice tone to them cheap too dont think it would hurt performance at all on a 2-300hp 350. Mufflers usually dont help much til the power #s or rpm start swinging up there

I have a 3" mandrel bent X pipe exhaust From TTI on my 71 Duster with Hooker aero chamber mufflers. Motor makes 525 hp exhaust is loud lol but its performance based. Hooker Aero Chamber muffs are straight through with internal baffles.

This is a picture of my exhaust from pypesexhaust.com

2.5" from the headpipe back, street muffler. It's not too loud, just louder than I'd like. To me it's kinda like walking in to a police convention with a "f*ck the police" t-shirt on, unnecessary attention...

I tired and tried to fit 3" under my 69 big block, but I just couldn't do it, without more mods than I was willing to do. I'm still making 550HP with the 2.5". Good looking system you have. The Pypes system I got really was simple, I put it under the car to look at how hard it would be to install, and before I knew it, it was installed, pretty much.....

To be honest if i do it again, i will go with side pipes on my vette. The typical aftermarket vette exhaust leaves no room for doing any work under the car, it has to be removed. And in my case i was ready to pull the trans cross member in order to get the rear end out. Its all out now, and i was able to get at the antenna too to do a repair. tricky cars to work on.

I don't suppose you have audio from your running car?
