I just got the vir out of my 75, I'm going to attempt to rebuild it. I can't seem to find anything on how to do so. I think it should be pretty straight forward with what is included in the kit. My question is, before I put it back on the car do I need to add any oil or anything to it?
VIR = Valve In Receiver. It was used in C3's from approx. 73 to mid-77. It was replaced by the modern orifice AC system.
The design was a POS(!), plagued by sticking or non-functioning valves and erratic AC.
My advice to the OP, if he wants a reliable AC system, is to purchase one of the 'VIR eliminators' on the market that replaces the vir with an orifice system.
FYI, I had a vir system on my early 77, went to put a vir eliminator on it, became VERY PO'd and finally tore out everything. I replaced it with a Vintage Air, even though VA doesn't make a kit for a 77 and I had to design and hand make many parts. I am now happy with my AC.
I've heard alot of mixed reviews on the eliminator kits if you have a stock compressor. Since I'm not planning on converting to r134a I'm going to keep it stock. I'm thinking the oil will get to it eventually since it is the lowest point in the system.
