An all new model should have an all new name 68 to 82 should have been mako, or anything except stingray, even though i guess they look more like a stingray than the 63 to 67s did,
People still call 68 to 82 shark bodies which sounds better than c3 to me
I have to go with Stingray because that's what's on the side of my 69. I understand the shark thinking with the gills on the side, but a real sting ray has 2 sets of gills on its body and a Manta ray's gills look exactly like on the Vette.
There was a lady I worked with that was from Malaysia. She had never seen a Corvette, let alone a C3. After I gave her a ride in the car, she gets out and says:
Pet Peave... People who own C-3 Corvettes and don't know the name. (Not directed at the poster)
68 NOT A STINGRAY
69 though 76 YES! It's an ACTUAL Stingray (one word)
77-82 NOT A $%^& STINGRAY....it's a Corvette ONLY!
All are 'Sharks' all are Mako's.
I always jump the advertiser's ***, who say "For Sale 1979 Stingray." NOPE! { I always pre-suppose that 'if you don't know the name of your car, you don't know ANYTHING'!}
The original Sting Ray name was copied from the British class of warship. Had nothing to do with the "Stingray". The c-3 styling, as mentioned, was developed from the Mako Shark concept car.
I suppose if you look close at my car pix below, you find out my opinion, it's obviously a VETTE, but nowhere does the actual name appear on the car......skulls, emblems, etc...but on each scoop is a metal shark in the black sea area......
My '69 is a Stingray but I liked the "Shark" reference enough to note it on my vanity plate. I also think I have a picture of the day that Corvettes started to be called "SHARKS" by the public!!
