Default 1973 corvette temp sending unit

Having trouble with sending unit. I read the forum and tested ok the gauge and wire by grounding.
When testing sender with ohmeter I start out at 800 ohms and soon after starting engine it goes down to 0 and ends up at -1.5 ohms? I take it this means the unit is shot? Wanted to check before ordering a new one. Understand that it should read 600 ohms at 100 degrees and 85 ohms at 220 degrees.

It should read approximately 100 degrees at 220 ohms. You can test the sender, normally when they are cold (they will be all over the place) but it should have an ohm reading at room temp around 600 to 400 ohms. If you use the scale on the link posted above you'll get an approximate scale for each temperature.

Also know that if you change the sending unit out it will more than likely not read correctly with your gauge. If it doesn't don't panic, I made an adjustable resistor for the back of the gauge so you can balance the two together. https://willcoxcorvette.com/corvette...resistor-68-76
