Default 1982 vette project

Hey guys,
So this is my first post on the forums and i figured i would start with a project. I recently (4 months ago) bought myself an 82 crossfire vette and im going to get her up and running and on the road this summer and hopefully make her look pretty by next summer. At the moment i'm just looking for general advice about the process, warnings, etc. Its been sitting since 99 in a barn that leaked up in NH but amazingly there is only one small spot of rot on the frame with most of the rest covered in a patina of surface rust. the TB's were jammed and i've heard so much about how bad they were so i took them off along with the intake and put on an edelbrock intake, the carb will soon follow.

Going to redo all the brake lines with nicopp, new calipers, new rotors, new e-brake assembly (the e brake still pulls and has no rust on it... amazing), i think the fuel pump is busted. Oh yeah and it needs a complete interior, but the floorpans are still solid with factory paint on em.

I took off the air pump that GM put on to pass emissions at the time cuz its rly stupid and drains power. thats all i can think of about the car for now, will be posting pics of it, if i can, on the site. again just looking for advice, ideas, or anything really.

Thanks for help in advance,
Zane

Congrats on your car,

The crossfire was cool and they worked good on a mentioned car but i dont blame you on this car ditching them for a simple carb setup, hope you are inspection exempt,

If it were me and i am very ADD OCD
I would start with safety stuff, brakes, suspension, then engine drive train,

You will have to figure out your plan for an interior, back to Stock or racer stripped who knows, up to you,

Projects are more fun when they run and drive

you have a long way to go .I would start with the motor to see if it runs.when you took off the crossfire you also need a distributer[best price speedway.].the fuel pump is in the gas tank.you have a 700r4 tranny that will now need a way to lock up the overdrive tranny. For the brakes I would by from local auto parts store that offers lifetime warrenty on calibers.for the interior I would call Wilcox when he runs a sale and by a complete interior. enjoy.

Take as many pictures as you can while disassembling anything. You will need them for reference even if you are going to replace parts with different parts. You're not out anything. Save fasteners screws bolts in zip lock bags and label them even if you are not going to re-use them they will tell you what to buy, sometimes you cant find a fastener and you will have to clean them up and re-use them. I learned this the hard way.

Default update

So i pulled the fuel pump because it wasnt turning on when i turned the key but before i bought a new one i tested it by connecting power directly to it and it pumped right away. so the pump works but there is no power being sent to the pump when the key is turned. however there is constant power to the float which i am assuming is for the fuel gauge.

any ideas on why this is happening?

Default update and a cry for help

So i took off the XF and put in an edelbrock intake + carb, trying to figure out which fuel line is the send and which is the return. I see one thats really long and one thats short. Im having trouble with the fuel pump as well, it works but, its not getting power at all when i turn the key. i already checked the fuse and its fine so i moved on to the relay to check if it was coming on.
i ended up removing the computer from the car to get at the relay, maybe this is the problem?
Anyways i haven't checked to see if the relay is functional but i had this problem even when the computer was still hooked up.

Also i got myself a new exhaust system to replace the old one and a new leaf spring is on the way, both to replace severely damaged parts.

And one last question, if the hard lines for brake and fuel are rusty on the outside, but seem solid to touch, should i replace them?

Define rusty... Pictures would help here. My 78 has some surface rust on some parts of the lines and I feel fine about using them. But, it also has 5,700 miles on it and has lived in the south in a garage it's entire life. (Yes I know this for a fact, I bought if from my dad) Brake lines carry a TON of pressure, so you can bet your life on it or not.

Default belated update...

Its been a minute since ive had a chance to work on my vette, school and work are a huge time sink and leave me with little energy to make the car nice. However i did manage to get the baby rolling around my town last summer for a few days and that was great. Hopefully i will have some time with spring break coming up that i can get it running and driving again, but by the end of march i will upload pics of everything done to the vette since i started. I love this car and fixing it up has been a blast, originally i bought it so my stepdad (does restoration work) and i could work on it together but he left and my knowledge of cars isnt the best so once i get pictures up any and all help, tips and explanations would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-Zane

I do not recommend this jokers to anyone. If you need warranty work it isn't going to happen. My advice is stay away from Monster transmission.

Sorry young man, but I don't agree with anything you intend to do.

1. YOU THINK you're simplifying but you're making it much more difficult and expensive.
2. Rebuild the fuel injectors or buy new.
3. TBI is FANTASTIC....and the 82 Crossfire MYTH goes like this;
A. Have you ever driven one> NO
B.Have you any direct experience with TBI? > NO
C. Have you talked to anyone who is ACTUALLY knowledgeable about TBI? NO
D.Why do you think there IS ANYTHING wrong with cross-fire? Ans; " I read it somewhere" go back to A.

I have an 82. (and a 69)..and it runs FANTASTIC...it starts before you can take your fingers off the key, the transmission shifts like butter. I get 26 mpg on regular 89 octane. The fuel injectors in my car are 37 years old and ARE ORIGINAL.....try that with a Carb.

Good luck.

Buy a Cross-fire book....LEARN instead of reading 'bloggers' who know nothing.
