That a 1978 SAE car would only have crossed flags on the front hood emblem instead of the 25th Anniversary round with the flags? I mean other than the owner changing because he likes it better or a wreck. Although a wreck repair seems unlikely as the flags seem to cost more than the round.
Maybe another way to ask this is... Did any 78's SAE editions come with just flags up front or did they all come with the 25th anniversary rounds for hood emblems.
To start with, you're comparing the costs of the emblems at today's prices. The 77/79 crossed flags nose emblem, listed for $23 in 2000, while the 78 25th anniversary nose emblem was around $69.
I'd say the chances are pretty good that the car was previously in an accident, and was repaired by someone using either 77 or 79 nose. It wouldn't be the first Corvette to have parts from another year end up on it, as a result of using used parts to repair it.

All 78's, Silver Anniversary's, Pace Car's and "regular" 78's, came with the round 25th anniversary nose and gas door emblems.

I'm thinking that it might have been a preference call on this one.... It's not in the rubber part and the whole front clip would have to been repainted and striped for it to be used parts. Why would you not have used the proper emblem at that point??? I've been under the car and there are no signs of damage anywhere. This is either the best repair job ever and a silly mistake or some strange reason for just the flags up front. Maybe someone stole the original???? and then they just slapped the flags up front for preference?? You can see where the original went I think, but it's so vague I'm probably reaching for that. Oh well I now have my answer. Thanks!!
If you decide to switch back to original... buy a NOS one on eBay. They aren't cheap, but it's the way to go should you want to replace it. You're looking at about $75-85.

Yep ordered a set last night. 178 for the pair and I figure I can sell the rear and the Flags and get half my money back. NOS in the original boxes.
It will be interesting to see if the holes on the nose line up for the round emblem as well as the crossed flags. That ought to tell you a lot right there.

Yes it will and i'm hoping that it's the same line up. If it's way off I'm going to be a little pissed...
