I'm trying to remove my water pump for rebuild and had 2 questions.
I got to 3 of the water pump bolts out easily but the lower drivers side seems to bolted through the idler pulley.
it seems that this 4th bolt is through the idler pulley and is just a hot on the end of a bolt. (Pic)
do I need to remove the entire idler pulley to get water pump off or is there another way ?
also, I noticed when I removed one of the other 3 bolts. Coolant starting seeping out the hole. I assume that is normal but do I put some plumbers tape on threads when I replace the bolt to keep it from leaking ?
I have to admit. I have never removed a water pump and I have definitely never removed an idler pulley on any of the old cars (mostly novas) I have had.
I assume the idler pulley is there to keep tension on the belt or belts.
I only have two belts currently. Water pump pulley to engine and alternator to water pump pulley.
I have AC but it currently not connected.
If I remember correctly, the idler pulley was only putting tension on the water pump to engine.

Hopefully it is easy to get back on correctly.
thanks again for help.

Removing the idler pulley and re-installing is easy. When you put things back together, I would recommend installing a crank to water pump belt.
Good luck.
Are the holes in the idle pulley wheel there to allow access to the nuts on holding it on?
I attempted to reach the easier nut last night and it didn't quite line up so I had to slowly use a wrench on it. I may try a smaller socket and try again if that is the point of the holes in the wheel?

I know the holes are for access to the adjustment nut, I think it's also for the bolt. It's been many years since I removed mine for maintenance.

Mine only currently has 2 belts. One for alternator and one for the crank to water pump. So I will definitely put that back on. My ac belt isnt connected currently.
Anyone have a picture they can take or know of a diagram of the alternator and water pump area for a 427 without power steering? I'd look at the AIM but I think there are so many different types of setups that it doesnt show my setup which is a 427 AC no PS car.
I took some pictures but apparently not enough. I forgot to take a picture of where the alternator adjustment bracket is suppose to connect to near the water pump. I also have a stud bolt that doesn't seem to have a nut for it. I don't know if it was that way or if I lost the nut for it. By deduction, it has to go on the top drivers side water pump hole. I also think this may be where the bracket mounts. I just am having a hard time believing i Lost the nut.
