I understand that Corvette repair was apparently designed by GM to be difficult, but I am at a complete loss as to how I am supposed to get this speedo cable to fit through this grommet. Note the tool below the grommet- some have mentioned using this tool but there are no threads in the '80 speedo cable head to thread the tool onto, and I foresee ruining the cable head in the process here… Thoughts or tips/tricks?
PS- is the tachometer wire supposed to go through the same grommet with the speedo cable?
Cannot… The other end that goes to the transmission is even larger. Too large to screw onto this tool. And certainly too large to fit through that grommet.
I just did this on m '80 and used my old grommet. You can put some lube on the grommet and work it through. I believe that is what the pointy thing in your pictures is for. The only way to get the grommet on is to work it around the end of the cable which goest to the dash.
I recently performed the same task. I found a plastic, cone shape object slightly larger than the cable fitting. Lather the grommet up with dish detergent and watch that baby slide over the cone and on to the cable.

How about the tach signal wire… Is it passed through that same grommet, or is there another firewall opening that I'm not aware of?
Just to close out this thread... No, the tach wire doesn't go through speedo grommet (someone in my car's past made some "changes"). I'm repairing the tach wiring via the harness as intended.
FYI- I used the tool I bought (after having to grind off the threads to fit into the '80 speedo cable end), and voila!
