Default Original carpet?

Removed the old nasty carpet on my 71 today and found these underneath, just curious if this was the original manufacturer?

Also under the carpet were these, mean anything to anyone? I'm going to keep them when I reinstall.
Top reads 437
Bottom reads CP6

These are similar to the tags that were on the original carpet on my 72. The second picture show some markings similar to those found on my car as well. It seems to have the purpose of identifying the car part while assembly was being done.

437 means it is a coupe
I think that second line is actually UA6, meaning your car was assembled with the optional alarm system.

I'll look for it, going to document as I go.
Here's a shot of the jack in its case, 😳

Those are original tags from your carpet and very few owners saved those! Great find!
Also, replacement carpets do not come with the seat belt grommets. These are the hard plastic "slots" that the belt slips through the carpet on the door side of the seats. They make repros but they make them from rubber and that makes the repros worthless in my opinion. Save your originals and reinstall them if you can.

Hi qb,
The photo of the jack compartment is a nice one!!

I believe whatever is wrapped around the jack isn't typical.
Typically the 'spring retainer' was just stretched directly over the jack and lug wrench to hold them in place.

Taking photos as you proceed is an excellent idea!
Regards.
Alan

I don't think there were any seat belt grommets used on the carpet on 70-72 cars.

Thanks Alan, just so everyone knows, car isn't a basket case, I just do one project a year, this year it's the interior. Frame and suspension done, exhaust, clutch etc.

Hi qb,
The car looks like a nice one!!
I'll bet it's quite a pleasure to work on.
How long have you had it?
Engine compartment photo?

As stated, those tags are original to the car and I love seeing them. I (and lots of forum members here) worked with ACC for about a year fixing the rear carpets so that they were correct and fit.

Only the 68 and 69 cars used the grommets shown below.. and while the originals were a hard plastic, the reproductions are flimsy rubber. I've found the only way to properly install the reproductions is to staple them to the carpet (and into a block of wood). Once you shoot the staple through the carpet and boot, you then pull the staple out of the block of wood and then bend over the staples... even then, until the carpet and the belts are fully installed they look horrible. Once down they look pretty decent.

Hopefully this will help you figure out the rear humps..

We just installed this 69 set a month ago..

Keep and use the original carpets as a trim pattern, we have boxes of them here that we've saved over the years and I can't tell you how many times we've used them.

Its funny too, I was looking at the 70 AIM and it shows the grommets mentioned by ED above, but to my knowledge (and I have an original 70) they were never used in 1970 production. I'd have to check a judging manual to see if maybe there wasn't a variation for early cars, but I've never seen one with the grommets.

Hello Wilcox,
Just to let you know, I know very little other than 69, so I don't know if the grommets were in the 70 and beyond. I just figured if they were and if Qball had them in his 71 I didn't want to see him throw them away like so many 69 owners did.

Alan seems pretty sure they weren't. That's good enough for me but I guess its not a bad thing to find someone with an original early 70 to see.

I put a set of those rubber repros in my coupe and it was a bit of a hassle. I wish I read your advice before doing it on my own. They look ok now, but if I find an original set I might switch them out.

While we are at it, here is a pic of my 69 roadster carpet labels.

My 70's build date was 31 Jan 70. I just replaced the carpet and the original did not have them.

Hi,
The mount for the outer seat belt changed position for 1970. It moved from the floor below the seat to the side of the rocker channel.
The belt was installed entirely above the carpet. Just the bolt went through the carpet.
Regards,
Alan

Awesome documentation!

I don't know my build date, but my 70 didn't have them for sure.

The only way I could get those things to lay in the car correctly looking was to shoot the staples from the backside edge.. I use a pneumatic Fasco stapler with a 1/4" staple and space the staples about 3/4" apart. (same stapler I use for the soft top installation) at around 30 psi pressure. Anything higher and you'll just blow the staples through the grommet and the carpet.

Funny thing, I had a set of NOS blue hard grommets and put them on eBay years ago. I did document them in some pictures and GM cut a slice off the edge of these on the bottom side at about a 45 degree angle... to this date I've not figured out why.

The blue carpet in the roadster is still original. It is a bit faded in spots but is in decent shape. No bad wear spots. I would like to have it redyed. There are some companies on the net that say they can do it and match any color. I may have it done but not before I really investigate it thoroughly. Below is a pic of the grommets in blue.

My coupe had its black carpet replaced before I bought it back in 1992. Its still in very good shape and looks fairly correct but needed the grommets. I didnt know how the originals went in. I didnt know about the staples until I examined another car with an original interior. But by that time I had already put the grommets in.....with silicone....I did it neatly and you wouldn't know unless you really inspected it.

If you decide to change, I can match that color. We just did a 69 BB blue on blue car and the color was perfect. Might be easier to replace than to dye.

I figure if it got totally messed up with dyeing it, I could replace. And I will definitely get the carpet from you. I read a few threads about the bright blue carpet from a few years back and I know you guys are paying attention to the proper color. Thank you for that.

I have my blue seats out now and will want to get those redone and probably pretty soon. You can do the installation on those correct? I have not bought any covers or any parts yet assuming I would just get what I need during the install. My hardware is good, covers are toast, my backs are not damaged, just ugly, would need to redye or replace those and the head rests are dirty but undamaged.

I don't want to hijack this thread further but if you can send me a PM or email me at ed427vette@aol.com on the price of the install for two comfort weave seats with new padding that would be great.
Thanks
Ed
