How much Big Block hp/torque will a stock rear take before bad things happen?
And what mods would be needed(if any)for it to last with around 550 lb. torque, 411 gear?
Thanks!
It's NOT the engine torque that you need to worry about, it's the SHEAR!
With street tires, 427 Hotrod runs about a million pounds of torque, BUT with slicks, even one "dead hook" will probably lunch your differential.
My 69 was a 427/435 L89 car new, then got an L-88, then an LS-7. Now it's a 496/???. It's never in it's life had an off the line drag strip style "launch". Still has the original 4.11 rear and the factory installed u-joints. Around 40k miles. I suspect one real launch and I'd need oil dry, a dust pan, and a broom.
I have heard that with decent street tires it is good for about 550 torgue. You will want ARP Bolts hardend ring and pinion, hardend axel shafts. And a new posi unit with carbon fiber on the clutch plates. If you going to use slicks or hit 600 ft/lbs of torwue. But then what do I know. Ast Tom he knows more about these diffs than anyone else.
