Default Tap and die set

Hi,

I would like to have a nice tap and die set (inch only)
I don't what a cheap China set, but also not a super pro set. It is ok it will cost some $

I would prefer US/EU made quality.

What can you recommend?

Thx,
John

Sister company to Lenox who I work for. Irwin was just recently purchased by Stanley Black and Decker. I have a couple of their sets of taps and dies. Use them often with no complaints.

I used to live near a salvage business in OH that bought up literally tons of industrial material including tooling. I bought all the taps I needed from them for BB and SB Chevy's for less than 5 bucks. He sold them for scrap material by-the-pound price. Most of them were very high dollar, industrial quality tooling with high wear coatings and were sealed like they had never been used. Might be worth checking your area for salvage dealers, you may get lucky.

It is hard to find inch here, we use metric. But good idea :- )

Great Gordon, it could be Irwin 24640 or 24606
I think 97606 looks to big a set right??

The 24606 would probably take care of 95 percent of anything automotive in fractional sizes.

I have had the same set of Snap On taps, 6-32 through 1/2 coarse and fine thread for 40 years. I think i've broken 1 and broke some teeth on another, otherwise, they still work great. I'm careful with things like drill bits and taps though.

Of course Snap On is spendy though.

Having nice tools is an addiction. Once you have a tap set you will realize that you now need cutting taps, bottoming taps, thread chasers - in every size haha. Now you have a drawer full of taps.

This is the one I bought:http://www.sears.com/craftsman-40-pc...p-00952105000P
Pretty much serves my needs, and is reasonably priced.
