I had and idea and wanted to know if anyone knows if it exists, in my state (Idaho) the law is that if your car is a 1981 or newer it has to tested for emissions. Idaho is pretty relaxed about enforcement of a cars noise and what not, but when it comes to emissions if you fail testing you get your registration taken away and you have to pay for it again. Emissions testing is every 2 years.
My idea is a quick detach catalytic converter that would be able to be put on in less than an hour without any real tools. Whenever the car is being driven normally the catalytic converter would be off and a pipe would carry the exhaust fumes back without any restrictions other than the muffler, then when it comes time to test it would be easy to put the stock catalytic converter on.
Does anyone know if there is a product like this? has anyone done this? Would it work if i just used flexible pipe and clamps?
Is everyone really this much against cats now? I can understand not wanting them on a track car, or not wanting to spend money if you don’t have cats and your exhaust is fine otherwise. I would think on a street car performance effects would be negligible with modern cats. I doubt you’d have trouble passing inspection either way as long as your corvette doesn’t roll coal or sound like a frieght train.

We dont have an inspection system other than emissions testing, they set up a machine to the end of your tail pipe to read, CO2 levels, CO levels, HC levels, and the dilution of CO+CO2, now I dont know much about these but that is how the cars are tested. With the stock catalytic converters I passed with no problem; while on the other hand all of my friends and people I know with no cat converters have failed emissions. The issue isnt modern cats its just the 35 year old cats that are so restrictive. I would buy a new one but I feel that spending money on a restrictive device would be a waste of money
I installed true dual exhaust and two "mini-cats" (each one rated for 3.0L engine) on my 350 cu.in. streetrod. No problem passing the emission test. I didn't notice any loss of power, but the previous bad exhaust odor went away completely.

Alright I may do this... may just get my cata from some junkyard datsun or something else with a small motor

Put in a "test" pipe when the cat is removed. Easy to do. Just put flanges on the pipe ends and bolt in. Same for your cat. Or just put in a high flow cat.
