Default 81 rear diff fill plug

Can anyone advise if the fill plug is a pipe fitting whereas the plug seats on the threads or does it bottom out and seat on the flange? I'm re-installing after many years and having heavy resistance, almost as soon as I started it. Cleaned the threads on both fittings so any overspray from paint is removed. I chased the male threads and got it to go in some more, but don't want to force it. This is what happens when you wait so long to reassemble.

The threads are NPT and I'd use either a Teflon tape or sealant on the plug. Always remember, Teflon is not a sealer it's a lubricant so that the thread will mesh and seal. 10 to 15 ft lbs is all that is needed for torque once installed properly.

Thank you. I figured as much but then had doubts as the resistance started on the first couple of turns.
