Found this on CL today. Something smells fishy. I thought 1969 was the last year you could buy an L-88 equipped Vette.
Seattle is a mighty fishy town! L88 crate engines were available over the counter. Who says this one is from a Corvette? The ad says it has a Corvette tripower setup on it. Sounds like a mutt...can hardly tell what it is.
That smells so bad you need to hold your nose. Without casting numbers, block stamps, and looking at the lower end, it's a guess. IT could have come from a 1970 pickup someone slapped a tri-power on it (for the cost of that alone is up there). And for $6k? The intake and carbs are worth almost that much alone- Maybe more if it's a date coded matching carb piece that someone needs to complete their resto.
Bring your casting number guide with you. Still no guarantee it's actually 1 engine and not pieced together. There were more engines sold than cars built with them. With the crate engines available now, I'm not sure it's worth 6k. For a 70 + the LS7 verifiable crate engine would be the "****".
Well, it looks like a 4-bolt main block from the two oil ports over the oil filter. The heads are most likely oval port iron heads with an oval port tripower manifold (400 hp). I'm not sure what the value is on the tripower these days but they got up to about $4000 and more for awhile. Still, the engine is a mutt. Venture very carefully. At best, it is a high compression 4-bolt main with oval port heads (only installed on 2-bolt main engines) with a very wrong intake and carb setup.
