Intake and Carb Hieght
I find myself having to replace my intake manifold due to the previous owner stripping out one of the threaded mounts for the water hose connector and jb welded it in. I am looking at the Edelbrock Performer EPS #2701 and I will be using an Edelbrock #1406 carb. My main question is will this combo fit under the stock hood on my 79 L82? The current manifold is an Edelbrock Streetmaster and acutally not even sure about the fit of that as the hood was not latchable when I got the car due to broken latches which I have already taken care of but have not put the hood back on yet.

I've got a #2716 Performer EPS and a 1406 carb. I can close the stock hood on my '80 but I haven't tried it with the air cleaner. I hope a drop cleaner will work. I'm getting all my mechanical stuff done right now (before primer & paint). I hope to get some time on the vette tomorrow and a measurement between the carb and closed hood. Gotta figure out something to use. No Play Dough around the house anymore. When I get the measurement I'll post it here.

The call of a shinny new intake is a strong temptation. I know, I have one. However, if I was in your situation I would try a helicoil before I scrapped my intake. Just something to think about.

what is stripped? thermostat housing or one of the big pipe threads? cuz thermo hsng is just 3/8ths 16. easy helicoil job.

I'm surprised I've got this much clearance. Looks like just over 3 1/2 ". I should be able to find a drop type air cleaner that will fit. Summit says this intake won't work with stock hood. I guess they mean stock hood and stock air cleaner.

get next size pipe tap and the right size drill. Don't think they have pipe helicoils. Might be able to borrow from pipe fitter. It is aluminum so it'll drill and tap easy. Then adaptor to right size. Either 1/4 & 3/8 or 3/8 & 1/2.
