Default A6 Compressor

1969 L46

I am trying to keep my car at least visually original as possible. My A6 compressor needs to be rebuilt... however it seems as though it would cost around $400 to send it out for rebuilding..... yet ... I can go on Ebay and find one for $150 to $200. Why is there such a price difference?

Chinese Labor??
Inferior cheap parts?
Not complete rebuilds?

I'm puzzled.

Thanks for your replies.

All three? Depending on the requirement to have a functional ac without regard for longevity, online vendors may be the best option.

If you're going to be recharging the system with R12 I don't think it would be good idea to cut costs on a compressor rebuild or replacement. Those cost saving could easily be lost quickly if you compressor problems soon after.
