I installed gaskets for my exhaust manifold with a buddy of mine. No issues really, but when we put it all together we noticed we had a small gap between the front bolt of the manifold. That bolt holds up the alternator and then goes through the manifold and secures to the engine. However, there is a small gap, like a nut (or spacer) is missing. Does anyone know what is supposed to be here? I don't know if it was there before we changed it out or not but we don't remember hearing anything drop and we couldn't find anything under the car.
why did you use a gasket? there is no need for one at that area
Apparently 35 years later disagrees. It fixed the exhaust leak. It was already on the drivers side. Didn't realize it until I went to add it on that side.
The manifold bolts are different lengths - just as info incase you didn't know. It depends on weather they are holding A/c, Alt or another accessory.
Some years had thicker washers on the bolts to make up the length difference.
I ran a tap (bottoming) into each hole and was amazed at how much crud came out. Just used the tap to clean out the holes, not cut the thread.
Yes, I discovered they were different lengths when I pulled them. I kept them in order as they came off. the front also hold up the smog pump I believe.
Here are two pictures of what I am referencing. They might now help as it was tight in there and my cell phone is big. But you can see the gap in the bolt and the manifold in the green box. One photo is a wider shot than the other.
That location is supposed to have a stud-bolt. The exhaust manifolds were installed, torqued tight, and sent out with engine. Accessories were added later at assembly plant. I seem to remember that fastener is a stud bolt with provision for the accessory bracket installed later. Bolt in that hole is in the wrong position. Maybe you used it in a different location? See picture in next post.
Can you show me a picture of the bolt I need? I will know if I put the bolts in the wrong order or if someone before me put it in wrong before I got it.

If the car is an L82 w/ac there is a compressor rear brace. The earlier cars had the A/C bracket plate bolted to the exhaust.
I would just get thicker hardened washers and go 1/16 to 1/8 thicker on the washers than the space and call it even. I use NEVER SEIZE on the bolts as I may want to remove them in the future.
Order a few catalogues - Ricks Corvette, Paragon, Zip etc - they have diagrams to help order parts and they also help identify parts.
Each year is different after 76 or so. I haven't worked on a 80 in a long time. The Chevy manual talks about French locks ? . I don't ever remember seeing any.. but most cars are not virgins...
Go to "Davies Corvette" web site and search for "713448". You can see it there.
Ya, I am pretty sure that is not the bold that came out. All 4 bolts were just that, bolts. None of them had threads on both ends. I guess the spacer was missing prior. Is it really that big of a deal to get it?

The more I think on this, the more I think we are talking about different bolts. If this were in the position I was thinking, there would be no way to unscrew it to take the manifold out. I will need to look again.
It is possible that the bolt in that location was a bolt with a stud sticking out of the top of it. No spacer involved. You just put the bolt in and torque it down and then a nut, washer and lock washer attached to the stud sticking out the top of the bolt.
This might be the situation. Good luck, Terry
