What about General Motors? American Motors? Ford Motor Company?
And motorboat and motorcycle etc,
Just i came up thinking of motors as being electric, others are sempatico with this somewhat askew stigma but most people interchange engine and motor...no biggie
The reason I bought it up, is because I was on a Pontiac forum and the people on their were all saying the same as me. So I posted it here. And when I was young, I bored engine blocks for 2 year's and the boss always corrected me if I called it the wrong way. To him. But most people where I live which is Michigan. Never called BB or SB. Only if it was Chevy. Even when I lived in Tennessee. But it's pretty funny now.
Thanks
John.
I was born in Ann Arbor, and grew up in the farmlands of Southern Michigan, just west of Detroit. We had plenty of talk about sb and bb Fords & Mopars. Maybe in your "neck of the woods" it was different, but I`d never heard of what you speak.
As for Pontiac people, we all KNOW about them!
I`ve been a Poniac fan all my life, had SEVERAL, and still have my goat & GP. But I stay away from Pontiac boards for a reason.
The only thing you can say for certain, is that "AS FAR AS I KNOW....." (See signature line... the ONLY thing I`m sure of, etc.)
I was totally wrong. They did refer to BB & SM blocks in every car company. They just said that Pontiac was questionable. But as far as to what I say. They said that it was old school talk. This is according to a google site. Lol . I guess that I'm old school.....

Thanks. At least I know the truth. I will, In the future be more knowledgeable.
John
And I tell ya what. I've learned more on the Corvette forum. Then ever. I really appreciate this site. It's like asking a doctor questions. There's a lot of great people on here.
Thanks
John
For me a "motor" runs on electricity , "engines" run on fuel
But being on forums a few decades hammed it home people interchange the two...
Wow.....kinda along the same lines, I worked for the local electric utility company for many years and we referred to the appliance as "electric range" and "gas stove". If you used the term "gas range", you were incorrect, and there was no such thing as an "electric stove"....but people generally use both gas and electric when describing stoves.
hmm, count me as a Bb Sb thinking guy.
I know chevy made it easy to mix and match their motors.
parts from other engines lol fit.
ford and mopar, not so much.
I've been a Mopar guy since my first car in '76 (I'm 58) a 70 Charger with a 318, small block LA engine, I wanted a big block so my second car was a 70 'Cuda with a 383 BIG BLOCK. Was called a big block in 76 and still called big block today.
I'm 59 and my second car in 1977 was a BIG BLOCK '70 Cuda too!!
Plum Crazy that someone painted Black....loved that car.
Correct sir. AMC shared one engine with identical exterior dimensions. My brother ran a stroked AMC401 in his Javelin but flew AMC304 decals on the aircleaner cover and valve covers. Nothing on the exterior of the car.
As a side note, another dirty trick we copied was plumbing fuel and nitrous lines, solenoids, nozzles all into the underside of the intake. The nitrous and fuel feed lines were concealed inside the heater hoses from the water pump to the heater core exiting under the dash where the nitrous bottle was hidden and secured. A dash toggle armed the system and a micro switch set to engage the throttle linkage at WOT conditions activated the flow.
I just thank god we didnt discover all about hydrazine/methanol/nitromethane back then.

Back in the late 70's and 80's I clearly remember speed shop bench racers constantly talking about BB Fords, one of the counter guys was a Ford fanatic. I however was a BB Chevy guy that quickly glazed over with all the hard to remember variations of BB Fords. B and RB Chrysler engines were commonly referred to as BB's as well. We all knew B,P,O cars used the same basic engine blocks in their cars so the mental image was obviously different. No one discussed Cadillac engines, no one cared. I think AMC was sharing block size but I'm too lazy to look into it right now.
I think It's the valve covers that puts the BB chevy into a different realm of big blocks for some, it did me.
Some people referred to the Ford Boss 429 with the nickname "The shotgun" ("385" series -429 & 460, entirely different block than the "FE" series) and the Chrysler 426 Hemi was often referred to with the nickname "The elephant".
Down here where I'm from the old 426 Hemi's are known as Rat Poison.
