I used to tell people that it was a state law that White Castle had to add onion in their burgers for the same reason gas companies had to add mercaptan (rotten egg smell) to natural gas so you could avoid being asphyxiated.

I’m now thinking the smell is exhaust. I think I’m used to smelling converted exhaust which is sweeter. I hooked a shop vac to the tail pipes and blew air in. Sprayed with soap water. No leaks. Maybe there’s another fitting under the car somewhere. I replaced all the gaskets I could find this summer up by the engine.

Good to check it out.
I fired mine up a couple of times in the past few days and let it run just to get the juices flowing - both the vette's and mine. The sweatshirt I had on that I threw in the hamper still smells a bit like gas, oil and old car.
These things are stinky .... and I don't mind ....

They all smell some....what I would do is instal an AEM wideband on it, you may find your car that runs fine is a little rich or lean here/there.
Well worth spending a few hundred on. It will run and perform better
Get the #s for idle cruis and WOT close then adjust according to "what the car wants".

My brother is a mechanic and has had some late 60s mustangs. He says his car has never really made him stink like that, so I do believe there is something to fix. I can't imagine this level of stink would have been acceptable in 1969.
I will look into the AEM wideband. Is that something you can use temporarily to tune the carb? I wonder if they can be rented/borrowed from a parts store.

Hi I think L-46man and I both recommend carb rebuild based on pics of that soaked carb in pics of first post.
Is the carb all set and you still have the smell ?
-ALF out....

I put the shop vac blowing into each pipe to check for exhaust leaks and did not find any yet. So potentially it's just coming from the tail pipe.

Hayes they are simple to install. Youll weld one bung (where one may put an 02 sensor, simple wire hookup. You can tune, then put a plug in the bung & remove the gauge or zip tie it up under your dash
Running lean can make a stink too almost a hot smell that burns your eyes.
Its worth it your engine will live longer, too.
You have new exhaust gaskets so thats a plus;Having a leak will throw off your readings.
When a carb is tuned to be razor sharp even with a cam it wont smell too bad
Plenty out there similar, Id call summit and see which one they recommend

All classic car prices went up in 2017 due to people having expendable income from the steep stock market rise. After the last weeks market rout prices for all but the very best may come back down.

I just wanted to close the loop on this thread. I decided to send my carb off to Lars for a rebuild. He found some problems with it, fixed it in record time and shipped it back. I reinstalled it and drove it around for an extended period of time today and I'm thrilled to say the excessive smell is gone!! Lars said the inlet fuel seat was loose causing fuel to come into the bowl uncontrolled. So I guess that was the ticket. Thanks to everyone that provided input in this thread. I now smell good. Well, better than I did at least.

Raphiki is right - check the plugs to see if it's running too rich.
I have basically the same car except mine has a Holley 4160. I just followed the Holley doc, used the ported vacuum (a source of debate I know) and set the idle mix with a vacuum gauge. Follow the service guide.
Runs fine but I do know what you mean - it's a bit stinky. Then again, I actually like the smell of things like gas, Hoppes powder solvent and old car upholstery on a hot day .......
